All about Domains and Web Hosting

Part 1

Domains

I hope you agree that having your own website is definitely the way to go.

That being the case your going to want to know a little bit about choosing and registering a Domain Name, and then Hosting that domain.

First of all, What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is simply the address that shows up in the address bar and directs your Browser to a website. Huh?

The software that you are using right now to view this page is called your Browser. Probably Internet Explorer or Netscape. Those are the two most common browsers used today by all internet users.

At the top of your browser is an address bar, it shows the actual address of this webpage on the world wide web. It looks like

http://www.marketing4money.com . The http part stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol and is the protocol of the web. the www part stands of course for World Wide Web and the marketing4money.com is the actual main address of this website. I say main address because if you want to go to a page within the website you would have to specify an additional page address after the main address. To do this you simply add an / (forward slash) after the main address and the address of the page within the site. Take this page for example The address is marketing4money.com/domains-and-web-hosting.html.

marketing4money.com: main address

domains-and-web-hosting.html: page within main address

The .html at the end of the address stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. That is the programming language used to create this website.

This is something you should seriously consider becoming familiar with so that you can personalize and modify your websites easily.

The good news is, it is not entirely necessary. Most web design programs such as what I use a WYSIWYG system. That stands for What You See Is What You Get. This system allows you to create a web site in much the same way you would create a simple table in your word processor.

We'll discuss this more in Building a website, for now, Back to Domains...

So how to I choose a domain name and then register it?

First you'll want to decide on the name of your website. This is a very important decision and one that will be permanent. You'll want to spend a bit of time on this. Some pointers to consider: try to get a .com name or at the very least a .net. Although many people think all the good names are taken, they couldn't be further from the mark.

It is not necessary to start with a 1 or an A since the search engines that will be listing your site are not alphabetical like the phone book.

It is necessary though, in my opinion, to have the main keyword you will use to describe your site in the name. Search engines weigh this point heavily. For example this site is called marketing4money.

If we analyze this name we will see that the main keyword marketing, which is what this site is all about, is the first word,  second word or term is 4, pay attention to this because this is a little known secret even some of the guru's don't know- the search engines don't recognize or even see numbers and 2 letter words!- that means to the search engines my name looks like marketing money, two very competitive and hard to find available keywords.

The use of this little trick will open the doors to many great available domain names. The third word is money, this is also like I mentioned a very competitive and highly searched term on the internet.

If we think about this from the visitors or searchers point of view, which is always a good idea, what would his/her reaction be to the name. For example: Ann is searching for a vitamin site to buy some vitamin d. She goes to google or yahoo and types in vitamins. Joe who has a vitamin site and has spent tons of money and time promoting it comes up #1 in the results, and the name of his site is JoesGreatSite.com. Number two in the results is your site, you've spent an equal amount promoting your site, but your sites name is AllVitamins.com. Assuming all things are equal who do you think will get the click and the sale more often?

Now considering about 250,000 searches a month are performed on google alone for vitamins, do you see the difference?

Once you have thought up a couple of name possibilities, you will want to find a reliable domain registrar like Dotster.com

to search for and register your domain. You will know immediately if it is available or not. The first one you think of may not be, but that's OK, use the tricks above to find a great relevant name and register it.

Dotster.com charges about $15.00 to register your domain name for an entire year. You are responsible to renew your registration at the end of the year. You can also register it for more than 1 year at the get go if you are the forgetful type!

OK, Once you've registered your name Domain name, you're gonna need some hosting for you site.
